The Town Justices perform marriage ceremonies by appointment.
The Town of Bethel Justice Court handles all traffic tickets, small claims, criminal offenses, and civil cases within the town limits. Both Town Justices are elected officials, each serving a four year term alternately.
Frequently Asked Questions
If I receive a traffic ticket, how do I know how much the fine is?
You must sign the ticket either “guilty or "not guilty" and send the ticket to the court.
If you plead “guilty", the court will send you a notice indicating the fine.
If you plead "not guilty”, the court will offer you a plea agreement that you must sign and return. If you do not agree the matter will be set for trail but you must notify the court.
How can I pay my fine?
Payments can be mailed to the Court or paid in person at the Court Office. The only forms of payment are MONEY ORDER or CASH. PERSONAL CHECKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED. Your name, date of birth, address, and ticket # or case # must be clearly printed on all money orders.

How can I file a claim in small claims court?
To file a claim in Small Claims Court, the defendant (the person being sued) must live have a business address in the Town of Bethel and the claim must be under $3,000. Filing forms are available from the court clerks during regular court Hours. Claims over $3,000 are handled by the Sullivan County Supreme Court. Application on our Forms Page.
